Dear Noah,
I'm writing rcp.el which is an alternative (and complementary) to
ange-ftp for accessing remote files. rcp.el is invoked by a special
file name syntax, similar to but distinct from the ange-ftp syntax.
Basically, the syntax used is: /r:user@host:/path/to/file
rlogin.el does remote directory tracking such that ange-ftp is invoked
when one does C-x C-f from the rlogin buffer. This is a good thing.
But ange-ftp support is hard-wired into rlogin.el. WIBNI there was a
general mechanism such that rcp.el users could choose to use this
package instead of ange-ftp?
In case you're interested, rcp.el can be had from the following URL:
ftp://ls6-ftp.cs.uni-dortmund.de/pub/src/emacs/rcp.tar.gz
There is also a mailing list -- mail me if you would like to subscribe.
regards,
kai
