Just to say how much I agree with this, this is my default Mail configuration:

It's a smart folder called "What's up" in italian. It shows only unread mails.
To "clean" it I just close and reopen the smart folder (great behavior allowed 
by Mail).

Anything else is handled with rules (and Things). ;)
