Eeee...being married to an artist, I see her side of this. If you see it,
it's copyrighted, that's automatic with creation. While you can get away
with it if you change to the point of unrecognizability, it is, according to
all the artists I know, (and I know a lot these days through melissa), a
dick move.

If you ask, and explain the use and that you'd like to modify it, and it's
not something they use or sell actively, the chances of the artist saying
yes are pretty decent.

That, by the way is the biggest complaint that she, and many artists have:
"why can't they ask"? Asking, even if the immediate answer is no, may get
you referrals to a yes.
