It's also useful for making it possible to keep the database where it
really belongs if you "bought" Apples disc structure as much as I have.
That's in the Document folder of the users folder under OS X or in the
documents folder in OS 9. I dislike apps that put *my data* in the
application folder. There's no need whatsoever to stay with the
consequences of typical MAC OS newbie mistakes like saving your word
documents in the Word application folder for example (I'm not saying
anyone here do that). Total separation of data and applications is how it
should be.

I keep my User related data on a separate drive (after a hack in Netinfo
in OS X, an alias in O S9) and if my system drive goes down, produced
docs and files and my user related data, like the email database or
preferences, are still there. It also makes it possible for me to bring
my entire HD to school and plug it in there into another computer, with
all my data coming with me, or update my apps, OS or even reformatting
the main HD, without losing data by mistake, because it was stored with
my apps or on my system disc.
In addition, I can backup from one point, no matter how many new folders
I create. When I want stuff on the desktop I make aliases.

On my Powerbook, that only have one drive, I just keep user stuff like
the emailer DB in the Username/Documents folder. But NEVER in the Emailer
application folder.

I have no idea why I wrote all that, but I did. Hopefully someone finds
it useful.
