Hi, MacOrphans!

I've read this thread through to the end, so I know that Chris and you
are close to solving this problem. And I know that you did try running
Outlook Express -- as tech support recommended -- in order to diagnose
the problem.

However, re-reading your statements above, I'm reminded that many
people think that Emailer is no different than any other email
application. That's wrong.

I thought now would be a good time to remind everyone else on the list
why it *is* a good idea to listen to tech support and try other email
applications before assuming that the problem isn't Emailer's fault.

1) It's easy to forget the difference between Emailer's "Email Account"
and "Email Address" settings. And Emailer's requirement to enter the
login name *and* the POP3 address into the "Email Account" setting is
non-standard, and can cause problems if your login name contains an "@"
character. Even if tech support can't help you enter the information
correctly into Emailer, someone on this list will be able to --
especially if you tell us what settings worked in the other application.

2) Some SMTP servers are very particular about the "FROM" address you
use when connecting to the server. If other email applications are
able to send email with the same settings but Emailer can't, it means
that you need to download the "Emailer Custom Settings" file from
<http://www.FogCity.com>. This is a known problem with Emailer.

3) Some SMTP servers are now using security methods that didn't exist
when Emailer was last updated. If tech support tells you to use an
"authentication" option in the other application, but you can't find a
similar setting in Emailer, it means that you need to download Chris's
Baton Mail helper utility from <http://www.mythtech.net>.

4) Some ISP's set up their "main" POP3 and SMTP servers to forward
connections to the "real" servers. (They may do this to balance the
load across the network, or so that they can instruct everyone to use
the same POP3/SMTP server address without having to look up each user's
real server address.) Emailer doesn't always handle this server
redirection correctly, and will fail to connect. If other email
applications can connect to the server but Emailer can't, it means that
you need to enter the name of the real POP3/SMTP server into
Emailer. If tech support won't give you the name of the real server,
someone on the list may be able to help.

5) Emailer 2.0v3 has a known bug that causes messages to be truncated
if the message contains non-English characters and ">" quoted text. If
you can send the same message from another email application without
any error messages appearing from the SMTP server, and without the
recipient reporting any missing text in your message, then you need to
download the "Avoid QP Truncation" applescript from
<http://www.macemail.com/emailer/CEMH/non-english_notes.shtml>.

6) Emailer, like any other email application, has its own way of
reporting errors. Even if the problem is the ISP's fault, they may not
realize it if they don't recognize the error message. You'll probably
get the problem fixed sooner if you give them the error message from a
supported email application than if you wait to find someone at the ISP
who understands what Emailer is trying to tell them.

Did I forget anything?
