My DSL provider, PacBell/SBC Internet, is now SBC/Yahoo. Like a fool, I
followed their "upgrade" instructions, led on by the lure of free dial in
access numbers for when I travel. Well, TANSTAAFL. The Yahoo SMTP
server requires authentication. I've been trying to set up Emailer to
work with Chris' Baton Mail program, and I can't seem to get Emailer to
talk with Baton Mail. I've tried it with and without the sample hosts
file included with Baton Mail, and using local host, 127.0.0.1, and my IP
address in the SMTP server field in account set-up. I keep getting the
following error message from Emailer:

>Execution of Schedule "Connect Now" at Wed, 1 Jan 2003 8:47:34
>Preparing messages
>Connecting to Internet using Account "Tellus"
> Sending mail using "localhost"
> Sending 1 of 1
> Sending message "test7"
> ** 550 not local host aol.com, not a gateway
>
> ** SMTP server error "503 must have sender and recipient first"
>
> Checking email account "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

The reference to aol.com is, I assume, the domain of the email address
I'm sending to. Changing the send to address generates the same message,
just with a different domain name that matches the send to address.

The checking mail account function works fine -- I can download email
from this account via POP.

Baton Mail does not log anything at all, except the fact that it has been
activated, leading me to believe that Baton Mail is not yet in the loop.

I've opened a hole on port 25 on my firewall software (Personal
Doorstop), and it logs an access to that port from 127.0.0.1 when I try
to send, so something is coming back it seems. It's just not finding
Baton Mail.

I hope I'm just missing something that should be blindingly obvious.
Wouldn't be the first time. But I'm also wondering if there isn't
something specific to Yahoo.

Happy New Year!

Cheers,
