After the holidays, etc, I only just got back to this thread and am happy to say that I can confuse things further!
The QuickHelp that was in my System>Claris Folder was labelled Quickhelp 4.0 and was actually 4.1.1 There was (and still is )another version filed on its own in the System folder and labelled simply QuickHelp which is actually 4.5.8. (Did this come with Appleworks 6? There are no other QuickHelps on my hardrive.) It wasn't until I trashed the 4.1.1 version that I could access Help from the Emailer menu bar.
