Yes, there is something going on with Emailer and scrolling. I've been using a Kensignton optical with scroll wheel for over a year. Every time I try to scroll Emailer freezes and I either have to force quit or force restart the whole computer. I tried a few maintenance things like rebuild emailer database, rebuild desktop, zap pram, etc but the problem is still there. I finally resigned myself to not even trying to use the scroll wheel in Emailer. All of this occurs in OS 9.1 on a PM8500.
