I assume, since you mention Apple Data Detectors, that you are in something earlier than OS X, right? Command-click should take you into whatever web browser is selected as the default browser in your Internet Config or Internet control panel. I believe that I only needed to make the change there when I switched from Netscape to Mozilla a couple years ago. Perhaps your computer somehow lost its association with your chosen web browser.
