We would need authorizations from the authors, and sites still active would require some automation to update the mirror when the originals change. Maybe it would be easier to just link those sites at first, but ask the authors to inform us or transfer the contents to our site when they someday consider closing theirs. >As I mentioned recently, after someone noticed that >Diane's macmailer site vanished, I have a duplicate of the Fog City site You can upload it to Chris' ftp and we'll decide of some folder organization to make it available from the web site when it's up. That way in case you can't get authorizations from someone in charge at Fog City or if they refuse, we could just break our web mirror but keep the private archive that doesn't infringe any law (or require member login to access it from our site so that there would be less risk of someone finding we abused their copyright, and so that we could argue it's our private home-hosted copy of once public data). I think I saw how to restrict access to some pages on my ISP's servers, it should be easy. Something similar could be done for other pages: link to the original while it exists but dump a copy to the ftp from time to time and mention that it's there for members in case the original disappears. It sounds restrictive, but real mirroring exceeds my current abilities and copyright can be tough or tedious to deal with, whereas emailer-talk membership is free and easy. >and wondered if anyone had a copy of Diane's site though it needed some >updating. Maybe someone could get it from Google's cache? I don't know how, but I think there's a chance. They even got some pages of mine that aren't linked from anywhere and can't be manually accessed from a browser without knowing their full URL, which puzzled me. >This could all be put together with the newer stuff into a single >consolidated site if Chris allows us to do that. I am quite prepared to >work up those individual ftp files, etc., into some web pages, so people >can see what the files do. I propose to keep the backup mirrors and current files on his ftp, and store our new web pages on the new ftp/web site that is probably stronger for web access (and maybe backup that too in case the ISP dies or some member makes a false move while on the web admin ftp). ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
