I think AppleShare sends plain text passwords as a
last resort, when the server and client have no other
password coding method in common. Some of the early
coding methods were quite weak, but if you are using
OS 8 or 9 level stuff it is very unlikely that an
AppleShare password will be sent in the clear.
Some of the windoze vulnerabilities exist in classic
Mac OS (such as installing and running things without
an administrator ok). I still use Disinfectant init
because I occasionally insert unknown old floppy
disks. And there was an autostart worm on some
CD-ROMs, so it is a good idea to turn off CD-ROM
autoplay in your QuickTime control panel to disable
the worm.
