Because when I pass the cursor over the hidden dock it pops up like an 
unwanted younger brother during a hot date. Of course if there is a way 
of permanently hiding it I should be glad to know it. However MacUser has 
stated that it cannot be turned off or permanently hidden.

Entirely agree: DragThing does all of the above and then some. Altogether
