Registration to NYT site is free, and access to current articles is free.
(Access to some editorial content is fee-based.)

Anyway, while I don't mind related off-topic discussion on the Emailer list,
I don't enjoy very long digests.  I think that any of us who want to read a
long news article will appreciate receiving the URL, and will then go read
the article.
