I've found another possible Intel/Classic solution for running Emailer on
the Intel iMacs.

There is an emulator out there known as Qemu. There is an OS X port of it
known simply as Q. The OS X port has a Universal Binary version. One of
the many processors it can emulate is the PPC and can run OS 9 on that
emulated PPC.

I've not got it working yet myself, but I suspect this is because at my
first quick glance, it appears the hard drive image format is not
compatible natively with OS X. So I can't simply create an image file,
mount it in OS X, and then copy OS 9 and Emailer to it. Instead, in order
for me to get a bootable image setup, I have to create a new image in the
Q program, and then start Q and boot it from an OS 9 install CD. I don't
happen to have one of them handy at my house right now.

I'll bring one home from work with me tomorrow (well, ok, today, since it
is after midnight), and try again tomorrow night.

The early reports are, the Universal Binary version of Q is unstable, but
that's ok, because stability will come with a little bit of time invested
by the developers. The fact that there IS a Universal Binary version
means they are willing to go that route, so they will hopefully get the
bugs worked out of it.

The other nice thing about Q is it emulates more than just a PPC. It can
also do a number of other processors. That means it can act as a Virtual
PC type of program not only for OS 9, but Windows and other OSes. Also, Q
is open source and free... free is always a good thing when dealing with
keeping alive an ancient email client :-)

I'll likely report more tomorrow (today?) night after I play some more
when I bring home my OS 9 install CD. That is of course after I go
dishwasher shopping and install whatever one I buy. Mine kicked the
bucket about a week ago, and the dishes are starting to pile up... so
taking care of that takes first priority tomorrow (er, today... see above
about it being after midnight). And don't start with me about doing the
dishes by hand. I did that for four years in my crappy rental place and
hated it. Having a dishwasher was one of the hilites to me about buying
my house... I ain't going back to no hand washing! (and also don't bother
giving me the talk about it being cheaper to fix than replace. I'm sure
mine is very fixable... but I hate the model, so I'm using it being
broken as an excuse to get a model I like and that actually fits my large
pots, pans, and bowls... but don't worry, I won't just toss the old one
in the trash, I'll offer it on freecycle or the likes first to see if
someone else wants to fix it)
