Yes, that is the way to set the default email application BUT it only sticks if you select a Mac OS X email application, so Emailer does not work. I went back and forth with Carl Lindberg who wrote RCDefaultApp about this issues some time ago and it seems that Emailer is lacking a "LSHandler" that OS X apps have and need for the mailto to recognise the application. Sorry no easy answer but Opera does work, because it is a preference setting in Opera and does not rely on the system default, so I was somewhat excited.
