Yes, your desktop database file has most likely gotten corrupted. Try rebuilding it in the normal fashion. As I recall, this simply means starting up the computer with Option and Command held down. If that fails to fix the problem, run a CD such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to rebuild the Desktop files and run other checks, too. Hopefully it's not a System file that got corrupted or you may have to boot up with the installation CD and reinstall the Operating System. Corruption of the Desktop file is very common, which is why I always recommend NOT saving files to the Desktop as you did. You should create a "Temporary" folder on the Hard Drive and keep it open on the Desktop. Use that as your general dumping ground instead of the Desktop itself. I don't know why but OS9 tends to be happier if you use it this way. Also, just a general reminder to everyone to keep backup copies of important stuff! > A friend wrote me to say don't download any Word attachment that > comes from outside as there is a virus going round. But that I could > send and receive a Word doc from my husband's computer to my laptop > and vice-versa - do you think that did it? No, but it doesn't surprise me that the act of saving a Word file should corrupt the Desktop database file. I'm not a big fan of bloatware. > I'm writing this in earthlink's web mail. Well done. I'm writing this in my office. :-) Martin ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
