I can describe two situations in which this happens more often: (1) - If you instruct Emailer to "Keep mail on server for xx days", then the Emailer client cannot wipe out the mailbox. It sets a pointer to remember which mails were retrieved and which not. - If, on top of that, you access your mailbox from another spot, such as a webmail or another mail client computer; then there might be 2 versions of dat pointer.
Afterwards when you return to emailer en 'get mail', it may transfer too many mails. (2) Internet providers sometimes stop their machine for maintenance. And then, later they restart but recycle their incoming (SMTP) mail queues with a couple of hours overlap. In that case I get like 12 hours of email 2 times.
