This is not overly unusual. Spammers develop new ways of getting thru the spam filters, and then the mail admins put in new blocks to stop them.

At the point of crossing, you will usually see an increase in spam for a short period of time.

Also, the mail admins may have turned off one or more of their filters to do some kind of an upgrade or maintenance, which then of course allows any spam normally caught by those filters to get thru.
