I'm going to try using "Shred Messages" as you suggest.
However, some long while ago I also added to my
Applescripts, one entitled, "Trash message + enclosures."

This latter, when used, has always sent up a message,
"Could not complete the last command because the message
wasn't handled." In which case(s,) the downloaded enclosure
went into the Emailer Downloads folder.... and then I had to
spend time looking at it, then putting it into the Trash.

Most of the enclosures were .html advertisements for a
product I knew already from reading the Subject that I wouldn't
be interested in reading. However, the download for these
unwanted products becomes separated from the Subject
and is identified only as Download .html # so and so, which
doesn't send my the clear indication to send it to the Trash.

I certainly hope your suggested "Shred messages" does
what I thought would be the result of selecting "Trash messages
+ enclosures."

(I'll let you know the result.)
