To add to the above, I was pointed to a piece of software that was
produced to allow the Import to gmail of addresses  from other mail 
programs

I do not completely understand how it works, but it may be of some
use in  a workaround import of addresses from Emailer into Gmail.
(it provides for exporting addresses to a CSV file, which can then
be imported into Gmail)
