What drive manufacturer makes good drives?

Is None a valid response?

At this point, it isn't so much who makes a good drive as it is who makes a less sucky drive. Western Digital and Maxtor are both consumer/commodity drives. Their quality control is lower, but that is directly related to their price per gb being lower.

In the end, buy whatever drive you can afford and expect that any drive you buy may be dead in 5 years time. Then keep good regular backups and spend your time and money worrying about something that you can actually control.

(Personally, I think Seagate makes reliable drives, as does Fujitsu... that said, I buy Western Digital and Maxtor drives on a regular basis because they are almost always a good bit cheaper than everyone else.... although I have stopped buying the Western Digital MyBook series of drives as I've had several that have either totally died soon after purchase, or worse, have flakey performance and end up locking up the entire firewire bus.... I've not had similar problems with the Maxtor external USB2/Firewire drives, so far those have all been fine, but with Maxtor, I know that I will only get 3-5 years life out of the drive before it develops regular bad blocks and/ or totally dies).
