Now I am wondering if it has something to do with my having had to
use the CE-P3 version? It seems to get hung up both checking and

Does anyone have any further illuminations?
While your ISP may not require SSL, gmail does (as far as I know). CE
can't do SSL. That means you can't send email using the gmail server.
Normally, not a problem, just set the outbound mail server to your
ISPs mail server.
However since you are using the P3 version of Emailer (SMTP Auth),
that is going to fail to let you send email via your ISP mail server
because it will try to authenticate using your gmail username and
password, which won't work.
Your only choice will be to set up a 2nd send only version of your
gmail account that has all the account settings for your ISP account,
for both inbound and outbound. BUT has your gmail account as the
Email Address field. That will cause the P3 version to authenticate
to your ISP's SMTP server using your ISP's username and password, but
send all email with your gmail address as the return address.
Or, you could move on to a mail client like Mail and simply check the
SSL box for both sending and receiving and work directly with gmail
and not have to deal with any extra oddly setup accounts.
Another screaming example of where it is time to move on from CE
because the hoops needed to jump thru are no longer worth the effort.
