I'm sure this has a very limited audience but I am going to post it
in case it is helpful in any way.
In 2005 I decided that I wanted to switch to an OS X email client
and I tried several ( mostly free or inexpensive) while keeping CE
as my main client. At that time I had a rather bad experience with
Mail.app and Thunderbird and settled on using Gyazmail. This has
been discussed on the forum extensively but suffice it to say that
I have been more than happy with Gyazmail but it certainly is not
the best for everyone.
One of the problems I encountered was with the importation of my
email records into a database I was happy with. No import to
Gyazmail but not much better with the other clients I tried. I had
about 20,000 emails in the file and wanted to be able to refer to
them on occasion. I ended up keeping my CE files and opening them
in Classic when needed but searching in CE was not optimum.
I currently have Gyazmail set up with three accounts, one for
Gmail, one for current mail via my isp and one for storing older
emails. This really works quite well so I am not likely to switch
any time soon.
Since upgrading to Tiger, I had not taken a serious look at
Mail.app but with the current discussion in mind I decided to see
if it would handle the importation of my CE database better than
previous versions. I am happy to say that it seems to work much
better than previously and I have been able to import all of my CE
emails into Mail.app. So far I am impressed with the search
ability of the current version as it will search all 20,000
messages about as fast as I can type in the search criteria. I am
not ready to throw away my CE files but if I upgrade to an Intel
Mac this gives me a reasonable way to keep my email files available.
Currently I am running OS X 10.4.11 on a MDD dual 1.25 GHz with 1
GB memory. I am also running 10.4.11 on my G3 Pismo Powerbook and
it runs quite well.
