Thanks very much, Nigel. I sent another reply to the list that got
delayed for some reason, but I eventually used quilt to apply the
patches (before I got your post, I found reference to that on some
webpage or other). It worked fine, and I was able to compile Embperl
without errors. It's now working, so that's a relief. Thanks again.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile making a new version based on the
Debian patched code, to put on the main Embperl download site. I don't
know why not, but it's not under my control so not my call. But I think
it would look good to have a new version on there that actually works
with the latest gcc etc.
