My current requirement is simple. I need the PC to have quadrature outputs. The IC on the input on the side of the stepper motor is capable of crunching... many milions quadrature changes per second. I don't use servo yet, there is no need to be precise in those high speed. the stepper motor mechanical phase skew versus the electrical skew increases with speed, in fact it is the only source of torque and motion.
My goal, the same as yours, is to get way lower price than ususal and to get fantastic capabilities too. Except of the quadrature outputs from the PC (over LAN in your case) it would be nice to have 3-4 sensor inputs (+, - limits, home and a probe).
