My plan for GWiz is that each wizard is contained in a separate
directory. Included in the directory is a gcode subroutine, the image to
be displayed for the wizard, the definition of the parameters for the
wizard and a bunch of other stuff.
In order to organize the wizards so that they are easy for the end user
to access, the wizards are contained in a tree of directories. A sample
hierarchy might be:
Lerman's Wizards
Milling
pockets
circular
rectangular
drilling
holes on a circle
surfacing
threading
rigid tapping
thread milling
Lathe
threading
The actual directory names need not be the same as what appears in the
tree displayed to the user, but it would be convenient for the developer
if they were similar.
Since the wizard developers are the ones who determine the hierarchy, I
have a hard time determining what a reasonable path length would be. I
don't see any reason to place an artificial limit on the length other
than what is imposed by the operating system.
Of course, a simple work around would be to put links to each of the
gcode subroutines into a single directory for all of the wizards. That
seems somewhat unattractive to me.

Aside from using more memory, I'm not aware of any. I hope that those
who are aware of other implications will clue me in.

In this context, none. If they did, it wouldn't work. How many would
like to? At least one. At any rate, it is rather arbitrary to make the
maximum length the same as the length of a line. And it is clearly bad
form to use the same #define for both.
