Stuart, I think it would help (some of) us to understand this better if you could define or point us to documents defining the functionality you desire. Are there particular gcodes that are usually used to do this?
I understand what you want, but I'm not familiar with the standard ways to specify it. It appears that this request and the other recent one on circular interpolation are birds of a feather in that one way to implement them is to have an active plane that is at an arbitrary (within limits) angle to the XY plane. I could imagine future requests for things like canned cycles that operate on the same plane.
