This is the call to make a symlink in python:
os.symlink(source to point to ,destination to put link)
Like you said I don't think there is one to make a launcher.

Thank you for the info Les and John T -I will try it out.
If we can make this work properly I think it is worthwhile.
Stepconf is geared toward novices and novices will have just
loaded linux for the first time -they won't wait untill they know
Ubuntu/Gnome before making a configuration. I feel anything that
makes it easier to get there 'foot in the door' is worthwhile.
Once they see what can be done they will learn the rest.
