So, after about the zillionith time I saw the commercial for OpenSolaris on this mailing list that is apparently generated by SourceForge, it suddenly hit me. Maybe we should be getting the message.
It has been a decade or two, since I used Solaris. but it does have a distinct advantage over Linux. It was designed from day one to support hard real time user processes. It also provides locking of individual processors to specific processes and locking of applications in RAM. I went looking for numbers, and didn't find anything really definitive. On some platform, though, it had an average latency of about four micro-seconds with a worst case of 32 micro-seconds. It sounds like a 10,000 per second servo cycle in user space would be well within reach. Just a thought.
