It is mentioned in http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html/hal_basic_hal.html
(which points out that they really don't matter, and are for
human-readable documentation only)

There does appear to be no mention of their significance (or lack of)
in the PDF HAL manual, though all the example net commands use the
single arrow.
