I've written a different version of this patch. Importantly, it handles g92 offset and g5x rotation. It shares the toggle-preference + magic comment approach, reusing your code.
On IRC, several people have expressed concern about the use of a magic comment for this purpose. I remain open to alternatives. If this issue can be resolved, then I'd be happy to see some version of the grid code go into master.
