Well, you may need an FFT to convert a time sequence of samples to frequency
domain.  The problem with FFTs is that you need a lot of samples at a fairly
high frequency to get fine frequency resolution int eh frequency domain
output.  If you have a number of fairly short samples with single-frequency
stimulus, you can extract amplitude and phase information from it.
