Families do have that effect! Don't feel any need to apologize! As I
had hoped
during some rough meetings around 2002 or 2003, HAL "broke the ice"
that had frozen EMC into a state of very limited progress. Perhaps all the
recent developments and extensions don't ALL derive from HAL, but I
think a lot of them do, and I want to thank you for creating a great
framework
for a lot of people to create useful stuff within. I know the PPMC driver
that you roughed out went WAY beyond what I ever envisioned in terms
of flexibility and automatically sensing the available functions.

I'm sort of nuts about rigid tapping, and that probably would never have
happened without HAL.

I agree that development might have started to level off when Michael
Haberler and others started plunging into yet other areas, and this is
great, and I hope they make great progress on these, too. A few times
the issue of lookahead has come up, and some torture tests I did have
shown that high speed path following could be a problem for people
doing profile milling. I hope Michael or somebody else finds a
way to improve this.

Also, the work on other RT kernels and other hardware platforms
is very exciting, as until the Atom came out, there were some
indications X86 support of low-latency RT might be going
away. And, a relatively inexpensive board with good RT
performance would be a good thing to have available.

So, thanks also to all the guys who are working on all these
areas of improvement!

Jon
