That's the process running in the background Charles mentioned. I can prevent lock-up by killing this process as soon as I log in but this is brain surgery done with a meat axe. I didn't see an obvious usage described in the man page that could be exploited to update the leases via dhclient. There is mention of an api into a running client. I haven't tried experimenting with editing the leases file to correct timestamps.
