currently I use just remote X11 - setting DISPLAY= to point to some X11 server
that performs acceptable but not exactly great; the Raspberry runs out of steam
doing that

headless X via VNC is possible in principle but that's rather slow

see http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BeagleboneDevsetup near the bottom
on display options

I would think a display cape should work just fine on a stock kernel; not sure
how well that works on the current Xenomai kernel; I dont have a display cape

the whole thing - running 'LinuxCNC' on embedded ARM (or Mips, or blackfin
or..) bards - will start making real sense once we can split LinuxCNC into a
HAL/Motion machine which runs a realtime kernel, and frontend which runs
UI/task/interpreter etc; this will free the UI from any RT operating system
requirements, meaning that pretty much any platform could serve as a UI

this isnt around the corner just yet, though - it needs some serious reworking
of interfaces
