Hi TomP!  Good questions all, I hope this email clarifies my earlier 
brevity!

No part of LinuxCNC uses Redis, and none ever has.  If someone has a use 
for Redis, it is available completely independently of LinuxCNC for 
Ubuntu Lucid and later (though not for Ubuntu Hardy).

LinuxCNC's tool information does not use Redis in any way, and it never did.

Nothing is being lost.  Redis is not used by LinuxCNC.

It was added in preparation for future work on LinuxCNC that would have 
made use of Redis.  This future work hasn't happened, and it's unclear 
if/when it will happen.

If changes are made to LinuxCNC to use Redis in the future, we'll make 
sure Redis is available on the proper platforms by way of a separate 
debian package.
