I should have considered that, but was pi$$ed enough at myself for allowing 
that to happen that I was distracted.

AIR, neither is particularly fond of I/O voltages beyond the supply rails.  
Subtrate diodes can turn into small scr's, and its roll the dice when a 
powerdown is done to see if it can be turned back off.  But if thats the 
choice, thats the choice.
