Greetingg Sam; I followed along for the 2nd time installing the xenomai kernel, and building lcnc for RIP.
This time on a fresh kubuntu-12.04.2 install. Gotcha's, in no particular order so far: dpkg-chkbuilddeps output a lengthy list, but I had to remove the mesa libs from the list in order to get that apt-get install (long list) to complete. It seems the libgl is a meta package, and cannot be removed. It also was not listed on the synaptic screen, invisible. But leaving them out was not reported in a subsequent run of dpkg- chkbuilddeps, so I proceeded with the top of page 3 of the NewRTInstall instructions. However, kubuntu seems to have a cache problem with the group file even after the adduser has been run, and the file then checked to make sure it worked, so at that point, runtests was a 100% fail. After the reboot, I re-ran the rip-environmant script and runtests passed 100%. I skipped the lp unload, and proceeded to run linuxcnc, selecting the sim/axis profile. Here it goes stubs its toe and exits, there is not, in the kubuntu repos, a plain pango, a plain cairo, or a pangocairo. So the python script bails out and returns you to the terminal screen. So how is this to be solved? Probably by adding some ubuntu repos to sources.list?, as I had no such problems running it on a hacked up ubuntu-12.04.2 LTS install that I blew away. Now, put this in your trivia file: It is not possible without some heavy duty hacking, protected by doing a chattr +i on the working /etc/resolv.conf file IF you choose to install either ubuntu 12.04.2 or kubuntu-12.4.2 from the "install now" button on the first, small screen the install media shows you. You MUST hit the "try it now" button on that little postcard sized screen, let it boot completely up from the optical media. Go make coffee, it will take a while. :) Then you can configure the network, then install from the icon on that screen, and the networking will be ok on the install reboot. I think that is the list of stumbles. Now; Anybody here know anything about memory drivers? When I had 4Gb in this box, the bios memory scan reported that it was 4Gb and operating in ganged mode. I just put 8g of memory in this box, ddr2 800 stuff but each stick is now 2G rather than 1G/stick. Now its reporting 8Gb ok, but 'unganged', which tells me its only half as fast on operation. Maybe I worry for nothing, it passed 2 full cycles of memtest86, and TBT the machine just plain feels more stable than this 10-04.4 LTS install has ever been. Its into swap a gig or more at a 2 week uptime, and kmail needs restarted daily else it gets to going to sleep on me for minutes at a time. I've dug around in the bios without finding anything there that looks like its something I might be qualified to putz with. Ideas anybody, or am I barking at the moon here?
