Yes - I should have explicitly stated that I think that's important.
It is currently configurable, but the setting only controls the top
end of the slider (or equivalent) in some (?) of the UIs.

I think that is totally reasonable, and is the approach I'd take,
especially since I think your changes are orthogonal to the
improvements Michael is talking about, and your changes will make
that later project, if it happens, no harder (or easier).
