I did commit in public twice in the past that I would do this work in time, and as a moderate surprise I actually did. As for your other remarks: you guys need to decide if you want this or not; if you do, I'm unsure where other people can help you gain the necessary exposure and familiarity. Many other people did, use and also contribute new code routinely, so it certainly seems to be possible. Regardless what happens, work on this branch will continue - if alone for the substantial user base already out there, the tangent of getting into debian (which I do remember as an agreed goal), as well as being the base the for the next step - farming out the realtime environment, getting rid of NML, go distributed and pave the way for post-PC UI's. I do advise against some not-so-well thought out ideas as aired on IRC which will impair mergeability downstream, and clearly would have a divisive impact on the project, besides being of factual merit which I - as well as others - cannot discern. If you still would like to go down this route, it would certainly help if you brought these ideas forward and propose on this list. Please indicate why 'new kernels needed' comes in under the 'unified-build branch' headline - I would think the single-source situation was the biggest drag factor of the legacy code base to start with. And the unified-build branch has made it possible to accommodate different kernels, giving more options. Also, in the case of RT-PREEMPT, the whole point of the exercise was to get by _without_ homebrew kernels and use a stock Debian kernel. IMV that's a relief rather than a downside. We chose to accelerate the development of UBC3 by implementing a separate buildbot rather than increase congestion on buildbot.linuxcnc.org. Our original purpose was to track UBC3 directly and also to extend coverage to more distros. Our buildbot comprises buildmasters and buildslaves distributed across multiple hosts, both real and virtual, in disparate geographical locations (Texas, Maryland, Austria). We continuously build and test UBC3 on buildslaves which include x86 and ARM architectures. Packaging for different distros is still being developed and tracking multiple branches is on the drawing board.
