There is no way to know what happens outside our git repo.  There could 
be out-of-tree drivers & silent users of any of our interfaces, and we 
would never know about it.

I think it's ok to break backwards compatibility, as long as you don't 
do it in a stable branch (master's the place for stuff like that) and 
give people a heads up.
