Greetings everybody;

But I am seeing no references to the microcode update being applied in
the dmesg output.

The proper code snippet from the deb does seem to be installed
in /lib/firmware/amd-ucode

gene@GO704:/lib$ ls firmware/amd-ucode/
microcode_amd.bin  microcode_amd_fam15h.bin

This link explains how it is supposed to be prepended to the initrd image
in cpio format.

<https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/x86/early-microcode.txt>

So this leads to 2 questions:

1. How can I test apply this to a running system to determine if it will
then be applied at initial boot time if relevant? And which one is the
correct one for this cpu.

2. How do I go about regenerating the initrd for that 3.4-9 kernel so
that it is included for this early boot usage?

3rd question, and unrelated to the above, is how the heck do I do
anything that needs root perms since x no longer accepts the attempts to
open a display 10:0 here.

Example: from a "sudo synaptic" while logged in as gene on this new to me
machine:
X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.

(synaptic:8777): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: localhost:10.0

Seems to me we had that fixed 6 months back but its being a major pain in
the ass again.

Cheers, Gene Heskett
