I feel like our git tags are quite durable, particularly when they are
signed tags as Seb makes. If gentoo has a way to check git tag
signatures then you can be assured you have the right source code, more
than if you download a tar file from a http service.

For a specific release series (e.g. 2.7.x) a Debian dists location will
be consistent for a tar file, but the distributions supported will
change e.g. from 2.6 to 2.7. so you would need to adjust the URL pattern
every few releases.

so if working from tar files is the preferred way for gentoo it seems we
should have an official source distribution directory that is not tied
to a specific Debian or Ubuntu release codename.

Seb, any thoughts?

Jeff
