Hi Yolande, welcome! Some of the stepconf tasks have been completed since the GSoC project idea was written, but there's always more work to do :-) The best place to start is probably to fork us on github (https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc), read the readme, and try to build and run the software. Oh, and come say hi in #linuxcnc-devel on irc.freenode.net . We continuously test on Debian Wheezy (7) and Jessie (8), and Ubuntu Precise (12.04), so we know it works well on those platforms, so I suggest you start with one of those. People have had success with many other platforms, but it often takes some tweaking to get everything to build.
