I am familiar with stepconf. I have not had the opportunity to work with pncconf as of yet as I have not used any Mesa hardware to date. While I do think that both of these programs are very helpful and useful for the first steps in creating a configuration.
The goal of what I am envisioning as a graphical viewer/editor is to make the more advanced or secondary configuration process more intuitive and easier to follow. While the textual based system works and works well, I believe that it puts off many people from the entire LinuxCNC program as it requires somewhat of a programmers mentality. It is easy for some people to use but it is not easy for others. Obviously I am not the first person with this vision as there have been many attempts at what I am wanting to do. I appreciate all that has been done on the LinuxCNC project so far as I believe it is an awesome project and product. I guess I would like to try and make t more usable for as many people as possible. If you look at the general population they like to be able to pick up their iDevice and press icons, drag stuff around on screen and connect the dots. That is what I am envisioning this application to be like. Therefore making it more acceptable to the more general population. I do have some ideas on some additional features for stepconf, so I may be able to help with that as well. > > I'm pretty sure you have no idea what kind of on-going work you are setting > your self up for :) I am sure you are correct in that statement! I will give what ever time I can to the project. My available time ebbs and flows as the year progresses. Spring and Fall are horrible as I work my day job and then Farm the rest of the time. Hobbies come last. > > > I did maintenance on stepconf and wrote pncconf and I'm pretty burnt out over > them. > > > If you are bent on a new config program - I would humbly suggest you keep the > scope small to begin with- you will find there are many many little details > that make it hard to write general function that cover general situation..eg > hardware drivers all use different pin names some just slightly some largely > so. I agree to keep it simple at first. I am also going to try and make it as modular/general as possible so that it is more flexible and adaptive for new components as well as simplifying the implementation of existing components. I have grand ideas i guess and it is easier to think of ideas than to implement them so I will take the baby steps needed to get this going. Thanks for the feedback and I will keep it in mind as I explore this project further. Research is the first step and I am just at the R in Research now. > > > Welcome ! > > Chris M > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Command Line: Reinvented for Modern Developers Did the resurgence of CLI tooling catch you by surprise?
