And I may have found at least part of the problem. In the xml file, there 
were two "placeholder" widgets defined at the bottom of the last saved 
file. I nuked them while I was restoring "sensitivity" because all the 
buttons were dead, using geany. I then proceeded to run linuxcnc and 
expand it till the tabbed window "full info" showed 893 pixel wide and 
673 high. The camera image followed without the fault exit. Its shaky at 
certain settings, but its not commiting suicide any more. I can actually 
use it I believe. But first I have to learn how to use all the alignment 
buttons that can bring into play.

So I'll go away, and later today will make a mounting bracket for the 
encoder that arrived Monday. This one, a 1000 line, will be on the 
spindle motors back shaft I made already. But the Z signal will still 
come from the disk on the spindle.  And my hal file grows some more. :)
