This is at the output of the mult2?

Exactly what I'm looking for, but why wasn't it named recip? I would have
found it in the first 2 minutes. :)

I think this brings up another accuracy reducing problem, the reciprocal
of the effective low gear encoder_scale is .000070947. Isn't that beyond
the 8 decimal places linuxcnc uses?

Actually its not quite that bad, I am importing ENCODER_SCALE_H(igh gear
value), which is only 7161.61, the reciprocal of which is .000130633,
then scaling that by the gear ratio depending on which way I need to go
to keep the feedpack and the tach display in step. At 1000 revs
requested, it totally doesn't care which gear its in, I get 1000 rpms at
the spindle. Its the (chuckle, 1 horse rated, tee hee) PMDC motor's
limit at 1500 spindle revs in low gear. That 90 volt motor is getting
about 125 DC volts at 1500, or 3 grand in high gear. Doesn't seem to
mind and has never warmed its case excessively.

Anyway, I should be able to sort this out now. Thanks Andy.
