I think there's little use for the functions SWP proposed, assuming his analysis that they have to take a HAL lock is true. The functions aren't useful at component-init time, because it's expected for there to be no connections yet; but they're not usable at runtime, which is when the dummysig trick is useful. Is there another use case to consider?
Go ahead and use dummysig if it's appropriate, and wrap it in an API if you like, but don't add these other functions without a good motivation.
