The A2 rod I have bought isn't that straight, so one would have to
average the rods gravity sag and UPS induced wibblies as its turned slow
enough the indicators electronics could follow it. Not impossible but
watching paint dry slow. I could salvage 3 7mm OD ball bearings from old
Sony bvu-800 capstan rollers, and make a 3 point roller gripper for the
rod to drive an indicator I bought to put on the tailstock barrel but
never found my round tuit. It has a data output socket that could be
recorded and analyzed. Its an idea that does seem worth investigating.
With some creative mounting that could also measure vertical bed wear to
determine if moglic is warranted. And I could make the 3 point gripper
a lot easier than making a laser diode mount that was straight enough.

Yes, I think that might be a faster, cheaper solution, as I can make that
from the junkbox once I obtain a full 3' length piece of A2. What I have
left is only a foot or so long. thanks Andy.
