Instead this machine has the fairly rare optional Magnescale option,
so each axis has magnetic linear scales (Sony SR-721RM scale with
MSD-9037 detector). These are connected directly to the controller,
and the old controller used them for position feedback. These are
circa 1987 or so.
Does anyone know how to interface these position sensors to
LinuxCNC?
Thanks for the help everyone, but this was a false alarm due to a
misunderstanding on my part. I blame the midsummer midnight sun. This
machine does not have Magnescales.
Each servo has a resolver that is connected only to the servo amp, and
each ballscrew has a second, totally independent resolver that goes only
to the controller. We plugged the ballscrew resolvers into the Mesa
7i49 and are getting good rotation information. Whew, crisis averted!
Most of the low-speed stuff on the machine is working (relays & SSRs,
hydraylic & pneumatic solenoids, the tool magazine, etc), and the axes
and the spindle are very close to moving, I'll post all the details when
we have success.
